Avendo Fee Field GuideCalculate payment processing fees

Chapter 05Last updated: November 3, 2026Published by Avendo

How to lower payment processing fees

You lower payment processing fees by measuring your effective rate, then reducing the parts you control: the processor markup, fixed fees and how each payment is routed.

The Avendo Fee Field Guide lays out seven steps in the order that usually pays off first. Interchange is nonnegotiable, according to CO by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, so the work focuses on everything around it. Small percentage cuts add up: Clearly Payments shows that cutting your effective rate by 0.20% saves $2,000 a year on $1,000,000 in card volume.

How can I reduce my card payment fees?

Work through these steps in order. Each one builds on the figures from the step before.

  1. Measure 90 days of fees

Clearly Payments recommends computing your figures for the last 90 days before changing anything. Divide total fees by total sales.
  2. Separate the fee parts

Split interchange, network fees and markup so you know which part you can change.
  3. Cut unused fixed fees

Remove monthly, gateway or statement fees you do not need. They weigh most on low volume.
  4. Match the pricing model to your volume

Flat-rate suits low or irregular volume; interchange-plus often costs less once volume is steady.
  5. Watch small tickets

Per-transaction fees hit small sales hardest. Clearly Payments flags businesses with lots of sub-$50 tickets.
  6. Route each payment to the best rate

Multi-processor routing, which Avendo provides, sends each online transaction to the connected processor with the best available rate in real time.
  7. Recheck every quarter

Card mix and pricing change. Recalculate your effective rate regularly.
Fact 01Savings math

What a lower effective rate is worth

Savings scale with volume. Clearly Payments' example is $1,000,000 a year in card volume, where a 0.20% lower effective rate saves $2,000. Applying the same 0.20% to smaller volumes:

Yearly savings from a 0.20% lower effective rate, calculated by the Avendo Fee Field Guide
Yearly card volumeSavings at 0.20%
$120,000$240
$300,000$600
$1,000,000 (Clearly Payments example)$2,000
Fact 02What you cannot change

The parts that stay the same

Interchange, paid to the card-issuing bank, ranges from 1% to 3% and is nonnegotiable according to CO. Network assessments of 0.13% to 0.15% are also set by the card brands. Any plan that promises to remove these entirely should be read carefully.

Start with your own number

Enter your statement figures in the credit card processing rates and fees calculator, then test a lower rate as Scenario B to see the yearly difference before talking to any provider.

Questions merchants ask

How do I avoid credit card processing fees?

You cannot remove processing fees entirely if you accept cards, but you can lower them. Compare your effective rate against other offers, pick a pricing model that fits your volume, cut unused monthly fees, and send each payment to the lowest-cost route. Clearly Payments shows that cutting your effective rate by 0.20% saves $2,000 a year on $1,000,000 in card volume.

What numbers do I need from my statement?

You need four figures: total card sales for the month, number of transactions, total fees charged, and any fixed monthly or account fees. Dividing total fees by total sales gives your current effective rate. Clearly Payments suggests computing these for the last 90 days before you change anything, so one unusual month does not skew the picture.

Can I negotiate credit card processing rates?

You can often negotiate the processor markup and monthly fees, but not interchange: CO by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce notes that interchange fees are nonnegotiable. Bring your effective rate and volume figures to any conversation, and compare offers on the same basis so a lower headline rate does not hide higher fixed fees.

Why did my processing fees go up?

Processing fees usually rise when your card mix shifts toward premium or business cards, your average sale drops, more payments come in online, or your provider changes its pricing. Compare your effective rate month by month to spot the change. Your statement's line items show whether interchange, network fees or the processor markup moved.

What should I check before switching payment processors?

Check your effective rate for the last 90 days, any contract terms or early termination fees, how the new option connects to your checkout, and whether its processors are PCI DSS compliant. Compare offers on the same effective rate basis. Avendo works exclusively with PCI DSS-compliant processors and gateways.

How do I estimate yearly processing costs?

Multiply your estimated monthly fees by 12. At $285 a month, yearly fees come to $3,420. If your sales are seasonal, add up each month separately instead. Small rate changes compound at volume: Clearly Payments shows that a 0.20% lower effective rate saves $2,000 a year on $1,000,000 in card volume.
